What Is ADHD?

Attention Deficiency Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by behavior such as inattentiveness, or impulsivity, It can manifest in distractibility, poor memory, time management difficulties, procrastination, difficulty managing long-term projects as well as paperwork. Social skills may be lacking and emotional dysregulation may be evident.

ADHD can impact almost all aspects of an adult’s life : work, home relationships, finances and mental and physical health. Such behaviors as a history of academic and career underachievement, poor ability to manage day-to-day responsibilities such as completing chores, paying bills or organizing things, relationship problems, forgetting things or getting easily upset over minor things could be related to having ADHD.
Almost everyone has some symptoms similar to ADHD at some point in their lives. If your difficulties are recent or occurred only occasionally in the past, you probably don’t have ADHD. ADHD is diagnosed only when symptoms are severe enough to cause ongoing problems in more than one area of your life. These persistent and disruptive symptoms can be traced back to early childhood.

Diagnosis of ADHD in adults can be difficult because certain ADHD symptoms are similar to those caused by other conditions, such as anxiety or mood disorders. Many adults with ADHD also have at least one other mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety.

When should you be evaluated for ADHD?

When symptoms impact your quality of life, pursue an ADHD diagnostic evaluation by a licensed mental health professional with a specialty in ADHD Assessment.

Cheryl noticed in her work with clients, that many adults have struggled for years with being unorganized, losing track of things, appearing distracted, finding it hard to start or finish tasks and believing they were inadequate in some way. Telling themselves that they need to try harder or they need to establish a system. It can be a relief to find out that it is not an inadequacy of their capabilities, but rather a common disorder that many people cope with everyday and very successfully.
